Film Review

Shabaash Mithu

Shabaash Mithu is a 2022 Indian Hindi Language film biographical sports drama directed by Srijit Mukherjee and produced by Viacom18 studios. The cinematic piece is based on the former test and ODI captain of India’s women’s national cricket team Mithali Raj. The film stars Tapsee Pannu in the role of Raj. The creative piece is written by Priya Aven.

The female cricket personalities weren’t popular earlier in India but Mithali Raj worked hard to make sure that women cricket team also gets the love and respect their counterparts get.

Although the filmmakers try to glorify the life of Mithali Raj through the biopic but the film fails to impress the audience and also does not do justice with the portrayal especially the grownup version. The big achievements and contributions to Indian cricket aren’t highlighted properly.

Inayat Verma as the young Mithali Raj manages to evoke the emotional connection with the cricketer and we enjoy the bond between her and child artist who plays Noorie.

Tapsee Pannu is a misfit for the older Mithali Raj and a wrong choice by the casting team. Pannu literally spills water on all the hard work done by the little girl Inayat Verma.

Kasturi Jagnam plays the elder version of Noorie. It is sad that the supporting artist is only one who manages to keep the audience watching the film till the end of the movie.

I completely understand that the story of female cricketers are needed to be told so that they get the popularity in India but it does not mean that the makers would be allowed to comprise the quality of the content.
