Emergence of cancel culture in Bollywood?

Cancel culture is defined as modern form of Ostracism in which one is pulled out of social and professional circles-whether it is online, on social media or in person. Cancel culture has negative connotations as well.

Bollywood is the biggest part of the entertainment industry. It is a strong source of income and generation of work for people associated with it.  Social media has become a medium through which people can raise their voice against anybody they think is wrong.

In the recent times the death of Sushant singh Rajput and Bollywood’s ignorance in the matter has got his fans and common people in general angry I am also angry and deeply hurt and I do respect him and fight for justice but the question remains whether the boycott culture is really the solution. It is a proud moment that the whole of India has united to get justice for the actor he truly deserves. In the long run we will also think about the side effects of the cancel culture on the economy as well as crew of the films which include those who are paid on a daily basis. We have to make sure that people who are responsible for the death of the star gets punished and not the innocent poor people trying hard to survive through the Pandemic.

The Bollywood brigade only speak when their PR machinery ask them to do so. Therefore the silence from their end on Rajput’s death was unacceptable to the public so the cancel culture was activated by the masses. The movies like Sadak 2 and Coolie no. 1 got released on the OTT platforms and flopped. The viewers want to continue with the same till Sushant’s case mystery gets solved. It would interesting to watch whether the commoners win this or the film industry comes up with a formula that helps the giant industry to revive the normal functioning and get the lost money back in the pandemic.
