Significance of a dream sequence in a film or a television show?


A film or a Television series a sequence is defined as a series of scenes that form a distinct narrative unit. A dream sequence is a technique used in storytelling, particularly in television and film to set apart a brief interlude from the main story. The interlude may consist of a flashback, a flash forward, a fantasy, a vision or some other element.

A dream sequence is visual medium for the audience to be able to decode particular characters feelings. It may include a nightmare, romantic sequences, fears and desires. It rarely happens that a dream sequence contributes the story. In most cases it just shot for a visual pleasure of the viewers in order to grab their attention.

  • Iss pyaar ko kya naam doon: All the dream sequences were really well written. It was required as Arnav’s dream sequence was going on. Audiences were able to get a glimpse of their favorite character through dream sequences.
  • Geet hui sabse Parayi: There were dream sequences between the lead pair Geet and Maan when they were separated in the show for real.
  • Pavitra Rishta: Arjun played by Ritwik Dhanjani longs for his Purvi played by Asha Negi as both of them are trying to convince the family about their love and marriage.
  • Sanjivini 2: Siddhant Mathur played by Namit Khanna and Ishani Arora played by Surbhi Chandana. Both the characters start dreaming about each other as they slowly start to realize their love for each other.
  • Veera: Baldev is acting like a Romeo and he is dreaming about his marriage with Veera, while situation in real life turns to be very different.
  • Ek haazaron mein meri behena hai: In the television series Viren dreams about Jeevika. All romantic sequences including a short dance sequence where Viren ends up dancing with his brother Viraat.
