Why is the Supporting cast important in Bollywood?

A supporting actor is an artist that performs a role in a play or film.  He or She has a substantial part in the development of the story plus the relationship with main lead.

Bollywood has been constantly changing in terms of content, the story and the supporting cast coming to the limelight and moving towards a balanced approach where the responsibility of delivering a successful film at Box office isn’t on the main leads alone.

Audience has become more acceptable towards a more wholesome content with many layers so that the masses could engage with the story as well as the characters on a larger scale. The supporting cast is very crucial element to give some sort of shape or form to the storyline. In the earlier times the actors only knew about being casted as the hero or heroine of the movie but today they aren’t afraid of exploring and experimenting with their parts in the movie courtesy to the evolving viewers.

I want to discuss six of my favorite actors from the supporting cast of various cinematic experiences I have had:

  • Paresh Rawal as Babu Rao in Hera Pheri. Paresh Rawal has outperformed the leads in terms of the comic timing. He steals the show in every scene he features in.
  • Ashitoush Rana as Lajja Shankar Pandey in Sangarsh (1999). Every expression in the villain avatar was flawless and Scary. He is one of my favorite villains.
  • Arshad Warsi as Circuit. Munna and Circuit scenes are most loved Arshad tends to demand attention of the audience and he is highly entertaining.
  •  Saurabh Shukla as Bala’s dad.   Bala is one film where the supporting cast has been outstanding in every aspect than Ayushmann Khurana. At no time the viewers feel that the movie is becoming slow and boring.
  • Jim Sarbh as the hijacker in Neerja was on point with his accent. The director of the film didn’t allow the actors who were casted as a hijacker to meet the rest of the cast until the actual shoot so that Sonam Kapoor can convincingly be scared of hijackers.
  • Priyanka Chopra as Kashi Bai in Bajirao Mastani she did a brilliant job as a first wife of Bajirao who is sad about the king getting the second wife home yet she has to maintain the decorum in the palace as the first wife should.
