Film Review

Karz vs. Karzzzz

Karz (1980) was directed by Subhash Ghai starring Rishi Kapoor and Tina Munim. Simi Garewal plays the role of negative lead Kamini Verma.  All the three leads of the original movie reflected the rawness of each character as well as the chemistry between them.

All the songs in Karz album were so popular that these songs are even listened to by the young generation today. Raj Kiran as Ravi Verma, Pran as Kabir Badshah AKA Kabir, Premnath as Sir Judah, Abha Dhulia as Jyoti Verma and Durga Khote as Mrs Shanta Prasad Verma are some of the iconic characters the 1980 film have managed to engrave in our minds and audiences still enjoy watching  the movie on their television screens.

While the 2008 film with the same name couldn’t cast the magical spell the old Karz had on the audience. The new avatar is directed by Satish Kaushik. The casting choice was completely absurd. Dino Morea as Ravi Verma and Urmila Matondkar as his wife Kamini was a misfit. Himesh Rashammiya in the shoes of the legendary actor is very disrespectful to the actor as well as the character. Shweta Kumar as Tina in Karzzzz did not possess the innocence Tina Munim could portray effortlessly.

Even the supporting cast Danny Denzongpa as Kabira was a weak replacement for Pran in the old classic. Gulshan Grover is a well known villain in the Bollywood industry but I failed to notice him as Sir Judah in the new film.
