India is diverse country with different cultures, religions, ethnic groups, Skin colours etc. Indian society still has a bias towards fair skin is shameful. This Indian behavior towards racism is reflected in the Bollywood songs with promotion of white skin.
Bollywood has spread its wings towards the narrative to portray discrimination for the dark skin as well. In fashion Priyanka’s character does not want to be associated to the black man in the movie. Even Boman Irani in Housefull does not accept a black baby to be his grandson. All these representation on the big screen is sheer racist.
Audiences are not ready register it into their brains that Dark skin can also be beautiful and we should be open towards people from all cultural and ethnic groups. Film makers are forced to cast a leading lady of a fair skin because they have to fulfill the demand coming from the masses.
There is some racial thinking prevalent in Bollywood which needs to be broken so that the society can also get rid of such a thought process in the future:
- Indian actors put dark makeup when playing characters that belong to African decent: In my opinion the makers with this kind of requirement should cast some actor who is really African to add realism to the script.
- The Chinese eyes: In many movies like Chandini Chowk to China Deepika has used makeup so that her eyes appear to look like a Chinese women. It is smart way to achieve the look but it pretty towards the Chinese community.
- The white background dancers: The film makers believe that the song number can only be made attractive by including either foreign locations or foreign dancers. This isn’t true Indian locations and dancers can also do a brilliant job at it.
- Bollywood is obsessed with white people: It is okay to cast white people in movies like Lagaan and other pre independence films but casting them without the demand of the script is not acceptable and offensive towards dusky skin tone.
