Masculinity in Indian Cinema?

Masculinity is defined as a set of attributes, behavior and roles associated with men. The treatment of men and women is pretty static with no shades in their characters in mainstream cinema.

As Cinema is considered as a mirror image of the society. Bollywood has constructed a certain framework around the depiction of manhood in movies. It has also laid a foundation in the minds of the audience which has led to a lot of thoughts and expectation of the common man from their lives.

Male representation has grown over the era in films. It has started from an angry young man image to the understanding and supportive partners. Now the time has come to break this stereotype and move forward towards the mutual respect and consent equation between the two main leads. The time is of dynamic nature so the description of manly behavior should also be revised.

The viewers are looking upon with hope towards budding writers, directors as well as the actors to provide them with very necessary revolution in the content department. They are very capable of defying the definition of masculinity with the help of cinema as a medium.

In the male centric society Bollywood taking baby steps towards the script moving to a more of positive masculinity in movies. OTT has taken an initiative to showcasing men who are able to express themselves on an emotional level rather than putting up the façade of a tough exterior.

In my opinion the mainstream films should learn from and adopt this welcome change in OTT platform. By doing this the public would relate to it more and leave the masses impressed with the diverse change in variety of topics dealt with in the Indian cinema space.
